What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
My question to you is (even if you don't read this novel of a post): if you were JD, Wash, or Nolan what would you do? Would you move Mike Young to DH/infield utility and sign Beltre or resign Vlad for his clubhouse and lineup presence, and perhaps most importantly to protect Hamilton?
It doesn't seem like an ultimate decision has been made on the DH/3B/Beltre/Vlad problem so why not start a new discussion on the topic. I've said in other comments that I tend to like the idea of Mike Young moving to DH/Corner utility not mainly to get his glove off 3rd but rather for all of the many benefits of having him at DH/infield utility (rest for everyone, Murphy's bat in the lineup more often and without sacrificing Borbon's defense while Hamilton stays in left, cycling through at DH, potential 8th bullpen arm which is a bigger benefit now that Cliffly has departed, versatility benefits through the roof).
I believe the benefits of Mike Young learning first base are not just for the team but also for himself.
I've been thinking about Mike Young's situation at 3rd base. He's in Texas for at least another three years, and who knows, maybe he will play 3rd that entire time. After that though the Rangers are going to want him to do something else like play 1st, 2nd, or DH (if they resign him). Considering he is not a 30 home run bat a DH role for the long run seems unrealistic. It seems like he should be the first one ready to learn first base considering he will need to play somewhere in order to stay an everyday player for the next 10 years like I think he wants to (and I'm not sure teams will want him at 2nd in the long run). In other words, its not only about sacrificing for the team, its also about his self interest for extending his career and making sure he's a lock for being an everyday player wherever he ends up, in TX or elsewhere. And 1st base doesn't have to be a 30 home run position I don't think, a producer like Young I think a lot of teams would welcome at 1st if he could learn how to scoop (of all the infield positions it is the easiest so long as you can scoop of course, which is not easy).
Mike Young, I'm sure you are tired of this whole situation and I DON'T BLAME YOU, but if you end up having to learn 1st for the team think about how its really in your best interest as well for the long run. Think about your goal of getting to 3,000 hits. And you know you are never going to get there if you keep trying to hit home runs like you did last year. Why not settle into a new position and keep getting those hits because that is what you do, and that is what we want to see you do for years to come whether you are in TX or elsewhere in 2014 and on.
I heard an interview with Wash saying that he wants Vlad to protect Hamilton because "as goes Hamilton so goes the Texas Rangers." This is something that I hadn't thought about enough. I guess I figured Cruz could protect Josh in the number 4 or 5 hole, but I guess protecting Josh is psychological, and a potential future Hall of Famer like Vlad is going to inspire more fear than Cruz, which could result in more hittable pitches for Josh. This is a very good reason to keep Vlad, but I still like the option of moving Young to DH and signing Beltre to play third. I just can't get over how many benefits such a move introduces to the team. Its just mind boggling, but it is a very tough decision for Wash, JD, and Ryan. I guess I've been holding out hope that they will sign Beltre, and maybe Beltre could play some first base and DH as well while Michael Young transitions. Of course if that is what eventually happens I will be sad to see Vlad go, I really like the guy and think hes an awesome bat and influence in the clubhouse. To be frank, it is possible that people love Vlad so much (personally) that they don't see that moving Young and signing Beltre is the better option. And they really should be clear with Vlad that even if he gets 200 RBI s that there is little chance he is coming back for another year in 2012 considering the DH/3B issues. If Vlad wants the respect he deserves in a 2 year it seems he should go elsewhere as the Ranger's needs just don't match up. On the other hand though, I will be happy to have Vlad back if that is what happens. I just fear the lack of versatility and other benefits lost. I fear the potential injuries if guys don't stay fresh, I fear the absence of Murphy's bat, I fear Hamilton having to play Center to get David's bat in the lineup, I fear Nelson's hamstrings and I wish he could play some DH to rest a bit, I would love a Beltre glove upgrade at 3rd, and on and on AND ON.....
I want Vlad signed. I may be the only person in the state who is NOT unhappy with the idea of giving Vlad a two-year contract. I think a happy and respected Vlad will be a productive Vlad.
I want Vlad. pretty much agree with Chris
Honestly, id rather they just let Josh, Cruz, and Murph all start, rotating thru the DH spot. I bet Murph puts up better #s this year than Vlad or any other still available DH candidates.
Wow, the perception of Vladimir Guerrero is so low that you think Murphy can put up the same numbers?
I like Murphy, but he is not Vlad level. Vlad is probably amongst the better hitters in the last 20 years. So soon people forget APR-JUN, and focus on JUL-OCT
Young's glove is a -2 WAR. Getting him off the field would be great.
I don't know if it is worth what it would take to get Beltre though. He would scare me coming out of a season that may have been a fluke.
Give Guerrero 1 year and put him at #6 in the order. Cruz belongs at #4.
Sign Vlade and Beltre, Trade Young to Dodgers in Three Way where Rangers get Greinke from KC. Let Young go home to graze in the green, green grass of his So Cal home.. Dodgers send frontline player to Royals. Rename Arlington Little Domenica and start a sister city plus cultural exchange w/Dominican Republic. Have a Viva Chavez Day to placate VZ players. Anybody with a 'Z' as the last letter of their surname gets in at half price on Thursdays. Serve Cubre Libres at concession stands.
Murph was better than Vlad the second half in all ways, and I think would take a step forward given a shot to play full-time. Vlad's done.
I'd move Young to another team, sign Beltre and sign Vlad.
I'd move Young and a significant package of prospects for Santana and David Wright.
