Forum > Justin Upton on the move?

Diamondbacks might move Upton... Can he play CF? Is he someone the Rangers should look at $49.5M for the next 5 years is his contract... Is he worth it? He's only 23.

A deal would be tough to make and apparently they're seeking a lot: an OF, a closer, a SP and a prospect or two is what this article calls for...

What do you think could get this deal done?

and Keith Law has an Insider blog post on ESPN about him.

And the OF, closer, and SP need to be major-league ready, if not in the majors already...

Let the speculation begin! Just remember, you can't trade the same player to AZ for Upton AND to KC for Greinke.

Here are a couple other articles about Upton from the same guy's blog (with quotes from Arizona GM Kevin Towers):

I'm not sure Upton is worth what Towers is wanting...
"He’ll be targeting guys that he’ll have under control for three or more seasons. “We’re probably looking at 0-3 type players (meaning zero to three years of experience) than four-plus,” Towers said. “To me, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to trade for a guy and then they’ll be gone in a year or two.”

*Most of the players back he wants to be big league ready pieces that will help the club contend next year, though he said that’s not to say there might be a prospect in the deal who’s a little further away."

Upton would be a nice young player to have, but I'd rather see what Julio can do in the next couple of years before I go trading away 4 top prospects for a guy with 157 strikeouts last year. I think if you're going to deal some of your better prospects, it's got to be for a top of the rotation type of guy.

In other news Mark Reynolds could be moved...
not thrilled about a .242/.334/.483 career guy who struck out over 200 times the past three years, but he's only 27 and has some pop in his bat and I believe plays 1B/3B. Wonder what they're looking to get for him...

What if they just wanted Chris Davis, straight up for Reynolds, would you do it? Or does he posses the same line that CD would have put up if the Rangers stuck with him all year at 1B? low average, lots of HRs and a TON of strikeouts -- and Davis is only 24. I think I'll stick with CD.

If the asking price is a ridiculous as is being reported, I would imagine it would have to start with Holland, Scheppers, Font, Beltre, and maybe Borbon if they want a major league ready OF, plus at least 1 or 2 lower level prospects.
tbh, they would probably want more, but wouldnt get it. There's no way in hell JD does this deal, especially if he can probably give up much less and get grienke. We are fine in the OF right now and don't have much of a need for him right now.

Would they want Borbon (OF), Hunter (SP), Ogando (Cl), plus Kirkman and Strop (a couple of extra prospects)?

I would make an offer just so I can jack up the price for other teams who are said to be interested in him, namely Angels and A's. I would not mind it if Arizona tell the other teams that the Rangers are interested in Justin Upton.

They would ask for one of (if not both) Perez/Scheppers, Beltre, one of Hunter/Kirkman, and probably a few lower level guys like Profar or Sardinas.

Upton has superstar level talent, and if they end up trading him, they are going to want a Teixeira-like return.

they're going to want a Teixeira-like return, but guys that can contribute this next season. Towers wants 0-3 years of experience in a guy who is major league ready. His thinking is to turn Upton into about 4 major leaguers that can help them win now. So I don't think Borbon, Ogando, Kirkman/Holland and then a minor league prospect or two is out of the question -- when it comes to the asking price.
Like I said before, I'd rather use trade chips to land a top end pitcher and I'd like to give Borbon another year.

Given the talk from the Towers camp about getting young, ML-ready talent back in the hopes of competing in 2011, I think one could argue that a less ML-ready component of that package could be pruned in favor of a Derek Holland or Mitch Moreland or somebody of that ilk with a bit of major league experience.

If we traded for Upton, we could use Cruz in a trade for an ace SP. But that raises the question, who would you rather have.....Cruz or Upton?

I love Nellie, but I'd rather have the 23 year old who is signed for 5 more years than the 30 year old who is due to get paid and injury prone. Assuming Upton can produce somewhere around .280/.350/.465, stay healthy and play good defense.

I think the whole idea is worth looking into (which I'm sure JD is doing, along with about 20 other teams) but OF isn't a NEED as much as a top end of the rotation SP (if Lee does not sign). I'd rather use prospects in a trade for a SP. However, like Snowcourt said, if those prospects can land Upton and Nellie can be used to land a SP... I'll do that too. Especially if we'll be receiving draft picks for Lee or possibly Francisco.

maybe we could use Loux in a trade for Upton (wink)... Think they'd be interested?
