Forum > 2011 TV Play By Play?

Any news on this yet? You could do worse than Dave Barnett I guess, but he's just kinda, well, Dave Barnett. I know some folks didn't like him cause he'd digress and drop in pop culture stuff, but I don't need to have the action explained to me, so that's fine. Plus, TAG is such a "straight man", that some levity balances the broadcast.

I guess Dave Barnett wouldn't be as bad on TV fulltime as he is on radio. When he doesn't tell you what's going on and has dead air for five seconds at a time waiting for the play to happen so he can tell you about it, perhaps on TV we can just see what's going on instead of waiting for him to tell us (poorly) what happened.

I don't have a problem with Barnett's work on the television side. He's certainly not exceptional or anything, but ...

Agreed on Barnett, I think he worked fine with Nadel. I listen to about 90 games and probably watch the other 70. I don't think he's great, but he is not bad.

On the television side, I think the Rangers need to bring in a journalist and not a former player. Grieve is the consummate professional, and already represents the team/player/front office point of views and he is a bit of a quiet analytical type. What would be the ideal partner is a broadcast journalism type, as they went for with Lewin but with hopefully better results, and a more committed individual to the job.
Its sort of like the Rangers catcher situation, whatever direction they go in can only be a slight upgrade at worst.

I rarely have the sound high enough to actually hear anyway. The only time I listen is when I'm in the car and can't watch.

I vote to bring Lewin back? Like him or not, he could make some great game ending calls...

Dave Barnett is a joke. He is horrendous.

How anyone can think Barnett for Lewin is an upgrade is beyond me.

I agree Adam, many of my best Rangers memories, particularly before this season, are accompanied by Lewin's voice and it will be strange to not here the words "Ball Game!!!" coming from the tv after yet another Rangers' win. The enthusiasm that he brought to the booth will certainly be missed, and I think we all will miss how he seemed to bring the best out of TAG, something I know Barnett will be unable to do.

Just while we're all rehashing opinions here, they never should have let Cotroneo walk.

I actually liked Victor Rojas too. He is doing Angels radio now, after not staying on at MLB Network very long.

meant Rojas is the TV guy for Angels now.

Not a fan of Barnett. A shame they let Victor Rojas go. Would not mind Steve Busby...him and Tom make a good team.

Of course, they could give Eric Nadel a shot....if he were doing tv he wouldn't have to describe the uniforms down to the color of the shoe laces.....

Nadel says he wants to stay just on radio. I'm not a fan of Barnett on the radio at all. He takes 10 seconds to describe a routie double play ball. However, I guess that wouldn't be such a huge problem with TV. And another plus of Barnett moving to TV is Busby may get a crack at color commentator alongside Nadel. Busby is very solid.

Am I the only one who would love to see Mike Rhyner along with Grieve in the booth?

Hopefully

I'm fine with Barnett on the TV broadcast if that gets him off the radio. He's just not good. When he is juxtaposed with Nadel, it becomes even more obvious. I suppose my first preference would be Busby paired with Grieve and Nadel paired with (almost) anyone else.

John Miller is free. Love to have him back here with Greive. Just as long as Morgan doesn't come with him!

John Miller does the radio for the San Francisco Giants full time.

Surely they can find somebody better than Dave Barnett....surely.....anybody!

Indeed.

But he wasn't baseball enough for The Great Nolan Ryan...

Unreal.

I'll be happy, as long as it isn't Buck Martinez or Tim McCarver. I can always turn on the radio and listen to Eric Nadel, though.

Steve Physioc? Thom Brennaman? Jeff Huson? Daron Sutton? Rich Waltz?

I'm not sure how many Fox Sports regional affiliate baseball play-by-play guys you've heard, but most of them suck.
