Forum > Strange Blanco report
There must be something lost in that translation. The Rangers may want Blanco to learn outfield to become a 5th OF or to have the ability to be an emergency 3rd catcher? Couldn't hurt to have more lineup flexibility. I doubt that this would come at the expense of his backup infield duty.

IF any of this is true, it would likely be the part about learning to catch. He could serve as the 3rd catcher for the team if Martinez were signed to DH/1B/C. Blanco may never see any game action at C, but it would be nice for Wash to have someone that was familiar back there in an emergency

Blanco was the emergency 3rd Catcher last season. It would be nice to see him snag some winter ball innings there. I think there were times when Wash didn't pull Treanor in CJ's starts even after CJ left the game out of fear that if Bengie got hurt, Blanco would be too poor to keep it together behind the plate.

This seemed really strange to me, from a report I found over at mlbtraderumors:
In a second article translated by Collias, we hear that the Rangers have told Andres Blanco that they view him as either an outfielder or catcher, but no longer as an infielder. The 26-year-old will work out at both positions in the Venezuelan winter leagues to try to earn another spot with the Rangers.
I don't know how to do blockquoting...anyway, I thought Wash loved Blanco's infield defense? And he certainly isn't much good in the outfield with that weak bat. And what sort of catcher can he become starting at this age? This just has weird written all over it.
