Forum > Carlos Beltran & Possible CF Replacements

I just read that Carlos Beltran might wave his no-trade if the Mets wanted to move him (http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5792180)... Although, he wants to finish his career in NY and feels he can still play CF.

How does everyone feel about trying to make a trade with NY for Beltran and using him as a DH/OF... I know he's had injury problems the past couple of years and that his salary is quite large, but he's in the last year of his deal and the Mets are likely to eat some of that salary if they move him -- might he be an option? Although DHing him would not help with moving Josh out of CF and unless the Rangers feel he is completely healthy and can still play CF, I guess this move would be rather pointless. Why replace an injury-prone CF (who can play CF at a high level) for another injury-prone OF?

I'm not extremely high on the guy or anything, but rather trying to find a CF replacement for Josh... When healthy Beltran can still hit and it seems like a move the Rangers could pull off. But then again, you might as well keep Vlad for less money. Beltran can probably (haven't seen him play in about two years) roam the OF better than Vlad though and it would really depend on how much of that salary ($18.5 M) the Mets would eat -- which would really depend on how much the Rangers are willing to give up for him. I wouldn't want to pay him half of that though. The more I talk about him, the less I sell myself on the idea of bringing him here.

I'd really like a guy that can play CF (besides Josh or Julio) so we could go after Crawford and put him in LF, Nellie in RF and DH Josh for the majority of the season. Even if we couldn't get Crawford -- I think moving Josh out of CF and finding a replacement is going to be a priority if not next year, soon.

Don't you wish Murphy had the defensive abilities to play CF? Or that we could have kept Byrd?

We all know Josh can play CF at a high level, but I'd rather keep him healthy and his bat in the lineup. Are there any options out there this offseason (trades or FAs) that might make sense? What do we see Julio doing next season? He improved towards the end of the season, but is he anything more than a 4th or 5th OF?

I know, I know... Beltran is not a good option -- but just trying to start some discussion.
