So, there is a Phillies fan in my building that I run into a lot, and he expresses his hatred of all things Yankees along with a congratulatory handshake for our beloved Rangers success.

With this we began talking of a Rangers v. Phillies WS and the possibility of a game 1 matchup of Lee versus Halladay.

Assuming the scumbag Yankees DIE like the dirty, overpaid scum they are....the question begs, would Lee v Halladay be the greatest pitching matchup in WS, or for that matter, MLB playoff history??

Google only finds the greatest single playoff pitching performances so i'm trying to remember some of the greatest matchups of all time.

Lee v. CC would be incredible too, but since I hate the Yankees with every cell in my membranes, I refuse to recognize this. It seems unlikely now anyways.

Jack Morris vs John Smoltz in game 7 of the 91 Series was pretty amazing. It may not have had the same pregame hype, but it may have turned out to be the best pitching matchup in the WS. Morris threw 10 shutout innings to win 1-0. Smoltz wasn't too bad either. Could you imagine going to extra innings of game 7 in Arlington? I seriously don't know if I would physically survive that.

Lee v Halladay will be pretty cool

@dub - Your question piqued my curiosity so much I've been searching for info. I found this site with some really cool info on world series history. Scroll down to the bottom and check out some of the pitching stats. One thing I found that I really don't like: the damn yankees won the series the year my dad was born, the year I was born and the year my son was born. SOB's

It doesnt really give good stats...premature page paste. Good records and info though. Bob Gibson with 8 CG's in the WS is pretty impressive. So is Whitey Ford's 33 consecutive scoreless innings streak in the WS.

I'm having a nice little conversation here with myself. 1926 World Series, game 7...down 3-2, Babe Ruth was caught stealing 2nd in the bottom of the 9th for the final out. Holy crap...what would the reaction be today if Hamilton or Cruz got caught stealing to end game 7 of a 1 run game? I'm getting lost on my trip down memory lane

Greatest pitching match up ever- Tommy Hunter vs Joe Blanton.

Who could gob down the most Mexican food. These are things we must know.

How about Gooden vs Clemmons in the '86 World series?
2001 Clemmons vs Schilling was great.
2003 Pedro Martinez vs Clemmons was damn good too.
Koufax vs Whitey Ford in 1963 is a good one.
That '91 Smoltz vs Morris game is a monster matchup.
Lee vs Sabathia in the 2009 WS was special.
Catfish Hunter met up with Tom Seaver in the '73 WS.
Denny McLain vs Bob Gibson might take the cake if you ingore the whole dead-ball era thing.

@K mart Fernando Valenzuela was almost as round as he was tall towards the end of his carreer. He might fit in with your dream matchup as well!

@Dave H Excellent examples. Smoltz v Morris was dynamite. I think this year's Lee has elevated himself so much in the playoffs that, with Halladays playoff no-no, that matchup would surpass anything I can recall.
