I think it goes back to the fading utility of the all-purpose newspaper columnist. Cowlishaw isn't a fossil, but he is badly overexposed whenever he attempts to talk intelligently about baseball. Ditto JJT, and, to a lesser extent, JFE and Galloway (at least they sometimes bring something remotely interesting to the table, though not very often).

Cowlishaw responded with this: nice list. Leads in shutouts 1-0. Of course he leads era he pitches in seattle.
