Forum > All-time Favorite Prospect?
I guess it's fair for me to give out my favorite prospect of all-time. I don't think it's some huge secret that I've been excited about Josh Hamilton since he was drafted by the Rays. I was extremely disappointed when he fell off the map, but I was elated when he became a Ranger.

No question for me... Ruben Mateo. I still remember the hideous injury he suffered when landing funny on 1st base.
WSGJ
Martin Perez. And hey, he's still a prospect! But just gotta feeling about him...

Derek Holland. I rooted for him at first just because he was the last ever draft and follow guy the Rangers would select. But I love later round picks who pan out, love the team finding that much value in late picks and low signing costs. I feel like Holland's ceiling is a strong #2 pitcher, and this year has been hard as he's struggled with injuries. I expect him to breakout next year when he, hopefully, stays healthy all season.
If Braden Tullis makes it, he might become my favorite, another example of a late round, unheralded guy who is performing well (though nothing like Holland has so far).

Mine was neftali feliz... I really started following prospects around the time of the teix trade, and when he blew up I was in love... 100mph is just fun. I always picked him over Holland, and I hope he gets a chance to start next year. I even have a sweet jersey of his!
Jake
Ramon Nivar. Seriously. That worked out well for me.

Painful for me to even say, but Hank Blalock. Really thought he was going to be a multiple batting crown winner.
Steve B
Buster Posey. I'm only 26 and really started following prospects in MLB last season. Plus i am a huge FSU fan. Favorite Ranger prospect was probably Elvis, although I bought into all the DVD hype a few years ago.

I also have to say I am really pumped about Holland and have been for over a year now. I hope he can stay healthy and Lee can help him develop. I think he has the talent to be better then Lee.

If we're going with just Rangers prospects (some aren't), I'd go with Derek Holland. I do like the whole out-from-nowhere rise he had, and I'm partial to lefties.

Willie McGee. I lived in Nashville and watched him for 2 years with the Nashville Sounds (NYY AA) and just loved watching him. I was 10 and I remember telling all my friends that he would be one of the best hitters in MLB. When he was traded to STL I started rooting for the only other MLB team besides my dear Rangers just because of Willie McGee. Man he was fun to watch.
As for the Rangers, I remember being all excited about Oddibe McDowell. He was on Team USA and after 1980, (miracles) I was all about Olympians you know. I was 12, and his name is Oddibe. I mean, come on. Say it out loud several times. Oddibe. See, isn't it fun?

This just in......dub's gettin' old.

John Danks. Damn you, Jon Daniels.
Aaron
Stephen Strasburg. I caught the Strasburg fever after I witnessed him slaughter the Pirates in his first start. He has the pure stuff to be the best ever, its unreal what he does.
For the longest time I never paid a bit of attention to minor leagues and prospects though.
Eric
Justin Smoak. The comparisons to Tex, his discipline at the plate and his last name were god send in my eyes. Too bad he'll probably shine with the Mariners...............ugh.
K-Mart
I though Benji Gil had it all.... Oops!
Always loved the name Trey McCoy, but I don't think anything ever came of his awesome year at AA in the 90's.
Snowcourt
Justin Thompson lol

Love me some catching prospects, like Pudge. Never was high on Salty or Tea, but I'm ready to see how Alfaro and De Los Santos progress.
Don't know if Joey was kidding, but I was expecting a lot from Nivar; and Tatis, and Botts.
Hank
Jeff Niemann. I try to follow any of the prospects coming out of Rice, but he's the only one I used to get hammered with.
Jobert
Jeffrey Dustin Frye ftw. All 160 lbs of him.
Rob Washingtons moustache
Aisde from Nivar, Michael Main, Joe Wieland and -- oddly -- Matt Riley are up there for me as well.

Being a USC fan, Mark Prior. He was a stud much like Kerry Wood, once upon a time.
Eddie
I also like Mark Hamburger. I just want to see his name on the back of a Rangers Jersey. It makes me smile.

Pudge. 19 years old, full of fire and a freaking cannon strapped on his right shoulder. I caught in high school around the same time he was coming up and the buzz was amazing. I have a Pudge bobble head on my desk right now and a dog named Pudge. You might say I am a fan.
I also remember the buzz around Blalock. I remember Gammons drooling over his swing and his power/contact projections. I really bought into him and thought he would be a perennial all star for us. Not that he was a bust, hell few guys ever live up to that kind of hype....

I was just curious about everyone's favorite prospect of all time. It doesn't have to be a Rangers prospect. It could be a player that got you extremely excited and then failed to ever produce in the bigs. If you haven't been paying attention to the minors very long, it could be somebody who has yet to even play above rookie ball. Maybe you like Bryce Harper, or perhaps you like Vin DiFazio. I'm just curious.
